Sometimes, just sometimes, I find my command of English in deficit. Such as when I approach the Bantry Bay Suites Hotel and try to describe the fragrance flowing in on the ever so slight morning breeze. It is fresh, mild and with that spicey saltiness that gossips about the nearby Atlantic Ocean washing the rocks down at the beaches of Bantry Bay. Visitors, like the fortunate residents, are anointed with 290 wind-free days annually.
Bantry Bay, South Africa – a suburb of Sea Point, Cape Town
And that is the picturesque one in Cape Town, a little enclave of privilege and comfort with its idyllic climes. Sipping at a slow-brewed very creamy, mild Caturra coffee extracted from the choicest Arabica beans, I am here telling you of guests lazing around an intimate swimming pool in a garden setting, with indigenous strelitzia vying for my attention with their beautiful orange flowers.
The guests enjoying the rustic garden are nicely isolated from the nearby central business district of Sea Point, Cape Town’s prime Atlantic suburb.

Close to all amenities, the Bantry Bay Suites Hotel also is within walking distance of the famous V & A Waterfront. As a person with limited mobility, even I can walk that distance if need be. It is only about 6km after all and very well served by the MyCiti bus service, with a stop a few metres down the road, not to mention the variety of meter cabs. The hotel has its driver but Unicab seems to fill in when he is on an errand. The beautiful restaurant on the first floor overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and one sometimes can observe whales, maybe the occasional orca, dolphins, seabirds, and shipping ranging from kayaks to ocean liners. It is a beautiful view as there are rocks below and the ocean swell makes its presence known by crashing into Africa with an exhibitionist spray of water sometimes, creating some fresh eye candy.Weather in Bantry Bay is temperate yet some winter days can become a bit gusty from the Northwest, bringing with it spectacular ocean waves, which is my favourite to watch. Upon countless occasions, I had driven from my home town 120km away to sit and watch the beautiful waves. From the comfortable apartments higher up in the neat building, one can enjoy the expansive views but also view the world’s most climbed mountain from the rear. That is the very Lion’s Head, a 669 metre sentinel right next to the majestic Table Mountain. Lion’s head gets climbed by hikers, some 200,000 of them annually.
Lion’s Head, 669m, the world’s most climbed mountain, reputedly.
Paragliders also launch from there and the sight sometimes is spectacular. At night, visitors can see long lines of hikers descending, resembling an express passenger train mysteriously coming down the mountain.Bantry Bay is also home to former Formula One Grand Prix sibling racing drivers Ian and Jody Sheckter, and Sheckter Street is close by.Rooms are very neat and comfortable, as is consummate with a Four Star hotel. I was impressed by the neat desks fitted with several power sockets to power cameras, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, power banks or whatever accoutrements guests may choose to employ. Rooms are air-conditioned and beautifully adorned with portraits, all in excellent taste. Beds are comfortable and linen clean and fresh. The Juliette balconies are a bonus, with sliding doors opening to beautiful vistas of sea and mountains visible from the vast majority. There are beautiful trees to one side and an outbuilding with the cutest roof garden on top.
